Song for the Sorrowful

Song · AU0002 · Created around 2000 · Released 4.7.26

Wrote this ridiculously bad song in high school so I could get out of an assignment in American Lit. Based on the book Grapes of Wrath. Got an A! But still, so so bad. Probably one of the worst songs I ever wrote. Released here for your listening pleasure. LOL

Recorded: My childhood home in Appleton, WI around 2001
Vocals and acoustic guitar: Justin Palm
Mastered by Cory Halterman in January 2026

(This song is in the album Early Songs, Vol. 1.)

The wind whispers in my ear The farmer’s life is one filled with strife He tries all day to make his way But the roads are long yet they lead the way To the hope of a job and some pay that day So as they drove along and everything seemed to go wrong The family sang this sorrowful song We’ve all seen trouble and far too much sorrow But we’ll keep on going along down this road We’ve all seen trouble and far too much pain But we’ll keep on going along down this road Till it comes to an end or it’ll be the end of the Joads The dust keeps coming and there ain’t no end in sight The farmer just can’t make it, they’ve gotta make their flight The dust keeps coming and there ain’t no end in sight The farmer just can’t take it, he’s gotta make his flight Something something, mud-filled pockets and even less to my name An old dirty wind-swept face, claims he’s got what it takes To work another day and maybe see some pay Broken beaten wartorn face Knows he won’t last long, afraid to admit to himself Something something, battered, bruised spirit, trying to survive Trying to survive, something something The dust keeps coming and there ain’t no end in sight The farmer just can’t take it, he’s gotta make his flight The dust keeps coming and there ain’t no end in sight The farmer just can’t take it, they’ve gotta make their flight
